Another act we’ve loved forever and been trying to bring to Tyneside for several years. You’ll know YoshimiO from the legendary Boredoms and perhaps also from Free Kitten, her band with Kim Gordon, and maybe even the song the Flaming Lips wrote about her. OOIOO is an all-female quartet that is so much more than the sum of its parts and dwarfs any description you may make of them.
Taking in angular No Wave chops, remarkable polyrhythmic ability à la Boredoms and an innate talent for creating visual and musical spectacles with seemingly barely an iota of effort, OOIOO are the band you wish you were in purely for the physical pleasure of playing that peerless, relentless, joyous, cathartic music.
As popmatters.com said of their latest album, “Nothing OOIOO do is conventional. Even within the deeply experimental fabric of their discography, nijimusi is a big leap from the previous album….OOIOO have brought the guitars back front and center, along with a healthy slice of prog, math rock, and free jazz.”
Words don’t do OOIOO justice, they’re a breed apart.
