TUSK Music Presents

TUSK Festival 2018

October 12-14

Hailing from Morocco’s Atlantic coast, Maâlem Houssam Gania is the youngest son of the late, revered Maâlem Mahmoud Gania and has grown up entrenched in the Gnawa culture of North Africa, playing the guimbri and singing from the Gnawa songbook since his earliest days. In great demand in his home country for his performances at the Lila trance ceremonies, where people gather to dance, to commune with the spirits and be healed of their ailments, Houssam’s renown has spread to this continent of late with select appearances at European festivals and even collaborations with UK producer James Holden.

At TUSK, Houssam will be performing an intimate set of deep and traditional Gnawa music with a small group accompanying on chorus and percussion in Hall One, preceding the performance by Terry Riley & Gyan Riley.
