The joy of live music is that even after decades of witnessing live performances, you can still stumble upon a night that takes your face off in the most joyful of ways. Such a night happened early in 2020 when Guttersnipe and Blóm, two of the most incendiary live acts we’ve seen in a very long time, shared a stage in Newcastle courtesy of The Old Police House. What’s even sweeter is that Blóm are a gem that have emerged on our very own North Eastern doorstep, releasing via the city’s great Box Records label.
To be succinct, Blóm sound like a female Lightning Bolt playing songs. Huge riffs through a disconcerting selection of effects, powerhouse no-shit drumming and drilling, evisceratingly insistent vocals confirm that Blóm have succeeded in bottling hardcore noise rock magic and, if they don’t have your attention already, will soon be taking up a large part of it.
