Lee Stokoe has been issuing cassette-only emissions from his Gateshead living room for over 20 years now, documenting over 200 sonic stabs and slashes from the UK and global sound underground and very probably having released productions by numerous members of the audience gathered here this weekend. Surveyed chronologically, the Matching Head discography reads like a map thru the evolution of noise and drone music from the mid-90s to the present day. Lee is an integral part of that progression too, of course, with his own gravelly utterances as the great Culver.
We wanted to hail this unassuming industriousness with an exhibition of the cavalcade of essential output Lee has softly pushed at the world for two decades by presenting an exhibition of Matching Head sleeve art. Fittingly and in line with Lee’s eschewing of all things digital, it is all hand-made with little more than scissors, glue and photocopiers and perfectly characterizes the ethos of both the label and the music it purveys.
